James Christopher Gaffigan was born in Elgin (Illinois) on July 7, 1966.
Marcia Mitchell, a fundraiser and charity worker, is his mother. Michael A. Gaffigan is a banker who was the former president of the Mercantile National Bank of Indiana.
He is the youngest child of six and was raised in Chesterton with his siblings. His mother died in 1990 and his father in 1999 of cancer.
Gaffigan grew up watching comedy shows such as “Saturday Night Live” in his teens. Gaffigan’s father was the first member of the family to go to college. He encouraged his children to pursue “secure” jobs and to continue their education.

Gaffigan is married to actress Jeannie Gaffigan (nee Noth), with whom he has five children: two daughters and three sons.
