His political career started in 1992 when his party was his party, the Social Democratic Party, and he was a part of the Peoples Front faction led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. Following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition. A group that rallied support for the return of democracy as well as the recognition of Moshood Abiola as the winner of the election on June 12, 1993.

After the taking of his position as the military head of state under General Sani Abacha, the general went into exile in 1994, and returned to Nigeria in 1998 following the death of the dictator who was in power. That led to the transition into the Fourth Nigerian Republic.

In the lead-up to the elections of 1999, Bola Tinubu was the friend of Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo. Bola Tinubu went on to be victorious in the AD primary to contest his bid for the Lagos State governorship elections, beating Funsho Williams and Wahab Dosunmu, who was a former Minister for Works as well as Housing. His mother, Abibatu Mogaji, passed away on June 15, 2014, aged 96. On October 31st, 2017, Jide Tinubu, his son, suffered a heart attack in London and was later declared dead.
